Hi, I'm here to talk to you today about your attempt to appeal to the "family" vote crowd. While I understand that better conditions for parental leave I would like to bring up the following points. How are you going to compensate the following people for the taxes that go towards something they will never use or currently can't due to the state of laws in Australia.
People Unaffected by Parental Leave:
- Couples who do not intend of having children - I fall into this category
- Couples whom have already finished having children
- Couples of an alternative lifestyle - LGBT
So I want to know Mr Abbott, why do my taxes go towards giving those who choose to have children now and in the future longer parental leave when I myself gain nothing? Those of us who do not want kids, have had kids or leave supposedly "alternative" lifestyles are feeling a bit left out here.
One last thing before I go:
Mr Abbott conceded he had previously proposed funding such a scheme via an increase in state-levied payroll tax but said he had since realised a direct levy would be preferable to avoid the need for the co-operation of states.- Tony Abbott
"Funding paid parental leave from the budget would be unfair to single-income families, who shouldn't have to pay heavier taxes to support the different choices that other families make," he said.
Am I a single income family?

The whole point of paying tax is not just what YOU can get out of it. What about the tax that goes to care for the disabled, housing for the poor, animal welfare etc etc and so on. We don't all benefit from everything our taxes pay for. These days women have no choice but to throw themselves into their careers so that they can afford to have a child (if that's what they want) and by the time they have the financial means and security they need, low and behold - they are too old to conceive! Why should having a child be exclusively for the well off?
Don't get me wrong, I hate Tony Abbott with a passion but I see the benefits of such a scheme.
I was wondering where exactly you found this particular post seeing as it was made on the 3rd of August 2010. Coincidently you also appear to have made an account for Blogger specifically so you can comment on this post.
Moving on - I know what taxes are for, I was specifically arguing that what he was wanting to implement isn't fair to the rest of the populace. Specifically those of us who choose not to have children and those of us who can't. For people who adopt children would he be willing to extend the paid parental leave? For the LGBT community who want to adopt children do they get the same benefit? I don't think they would get a look in. And my point about being a single income family still stands. Where exactly would I fit into the funding scheme of things?
After all he does say "Funding paid parental leave from the budget would be unfair to single-income families, who shouldn't have to pay heavier taxes to support the different choices that other families make."
Sorry, I was in a weird mood.
How are you anyways?
